Autocomplete Searches

January 31st, 2010
Example

Autocomplete with autocorrection

This is the weekend of search coding! To kick it off, the autocomplete function of the RP searchbox works for RunPartners AND Teams.

  • Search teams by Acronym or Name
  • Search users by first name, last, or both
  • Autospelling correction for all searches
  • Click item to jump to its page

NOTE: Autocomplete dropdown does not work in IE8. This is a know MS bug that they need to fix in Redmond. It works in all other browsers, including IE7.

Customize Analyzer

January 25th, 2010

The Analysis page has been enriched.  Unlike flour, this means faster loading / more chart options / no hanging! Let’s review:

  • Customized date ranges available
  • Verses charts (weekly) available with negative bars
  • Greater date presets including all years run

Customized Dates

Previously you could only use the provided preset date ranges. That was rather restrictive, so now you can enter by hand any date range. Note that if things turn red and shake violently, you must not be using the Gregorian calendar. Make sure you use mm/dd/yyyy.

Verses Charts

verses chart

Weekly Verses Chart example

If this chart does not make sense, read further: Positive bars indicate that the comparee (person you are compared to) did more of that type of activity during the given period of time (i.e. week). A negative bar means that you did more than that person in that time period. Note that the size of the bar is how much more you did than them.

Though negative bars do not sound very exciting, you better be excited. Gaining this functionality required rewriting the flash magic. While we could have just decided that nobody needed this kind of erudite chart, that would go against the policy of RP. So, please, someone take this chart and put it up on the fridge for us.

More Presets

If you aren’t excite about customized chart ranges, then at least enjoy the new list of years provided! The list will have all years that you and whoever you are comparing in verses mode have run in, so you can try to find some place where you beat them (i.e. 2mi during that year in middle school. Thank’s National Fitness mile!)

Update

Activity “Linking”

January 24th, 2010

“Linking” occurs when a user indicates that other RP users participated with them in an activity. Such linked individuals are “RunPartners” for that activity.

Adding a “Link”

The “Link w/” box in the Add Activity page allows entry of the people you participated with. ONLY people who are your currently friends with (see Privacy Settings) can be added to an activity. Teams can also be Linked to this way.

Prefilling with a Link

The power of Linking activities is that your friends can now prefill their activity. There is no need to call someone and ask how long a run was or go find their log entry. We’ll do it automatically.

When you Add Activity for a day on which someone Linked you, you will get a popup offering to fill in the form with their information. Before filling it in you can Preview the information that will be filled in. You can also Ignore it and it will be hidden or you can Remove it.

Clicking Prefill will update all applicable fields in the activity form and hide the Link popup. Note that a small excerpt of the comment rather than the entire comment is shown, so that you can jog your memory of the activity.

Removing a “Link”

If a Link was made in error, or if you did not want to be Linked to, you may easily remove the Link. Simply visit the calendar page with the Linked activity, hover over your name and click the button. Links can be remove by both the people that made them and the person that was linked. Linked Teams can be removed by the team officers.

Links can also be removed through the popup in the Add Activity pane (see above).

“Linking Notifications

By default users will not be notified when someone Links them to an activity. By enabling Linking notifications in the Settings>Notifications menu you can receive an email every time a user with the activity a user Linked you to.

FAQ

Teams

January 23rd, 2010

To work with teams, visit Community>Teams from the menu. This page lists all your teams, as well as the other teams on RunPartner. Global teams (that is site wide) are listed by their size, distance from your home network, and total miles run by that team.

Joining a Team

From the Teams page (see above), find the desired team and click its Request Join button . You can also search for teams in the search box at the top left of the page. Depending on the team membership type you will either be added to the team automatically, or once the officers approve you.

If you are already a member of this team, click its link in your My Teams list, or its emblem.

Creating a Team

When creating a team, please read the complete documentation on this page to familiarize yourself with the rules and policies of RP Teams.

To create the team click the  Create Teams link in the Team Actions board from the Community>Teams page.

Fill out the form and submit. Your team will be created with you as the coach. Now send invites to your friends to join RP and the team!

Team Membership

Membership can be:

  • Public: Any RP member can join team automatically by requesting membership.
  • Rquest: Prospective members must request to join, and the officers then approve them.
  • Invite: The team officers must send invitations to prospective members to join.

See also team notifications.

Team Privacy

Team privacy can be:

  • Public: team page can be viewed by all RP members.
  • Private: team page can only be viewed by its members.

Note that all teams are listed in the Teams page regardless of this setting, but further access is inhibited.

Editing Teams

Only the officers of a team can edit a team. All teams properties can be changed from the Team Actions panel found on the top right of the respective team’s homepage. If you cannot see this panel when on the page of your team, you are not an officer.

Team Officers

Team officers are the captains/coaches of a team. When a team is created, that person is the coach by default. This individual can then approve other members and set their membership on the team to:

  • Captain
  • Coach
  • Member
  • Alumni

An officer can demote themselves to Member or Alumni, however there must always be at least one officer on a team. Thus the last remaining officer on a team cannot demote themselves.

NOTE: The founding officer will remain permanently an officer on the team.

Team Officer Provisioning

Team officer status is the sole responsibility of the team and its founding officer. Current officers may modify the privileges of other members by Editing Teams.

Disputes regarding team officer status and or team membership shall not be arbitrated by RunPartner and remain the sole discretion of the current team officers.

Removing Members

A team officer can remove a member from the team through the team options. This member will not longer be a member, however they may reapply for membership in the future.

For a member to quit a team, the coach must remove them.

Team Notifications

Team notifications will be sent to the email address of the member for the following reasons:

  • Membership Request: if a team has request membership type, the officers will all receive a copy of the membership request.
  • Membership Approval: once approved (see above), the requester will receive an informing them that they are on the team now.

Team Invitations

Officers can invite friends to join RP and the team by sending Team Invites. Invitees can be either existing members or new members to the site. Once accepted, the person will be added to your team automatically. The form to send a team invite can be found Team Actions panel on the respective team page.

FAQ

Instant Pace Calculator

January 15th, 2010

This is not your grandfather’s pace calculator. No sliderule required.

The premise is simple. You are entering your run and can’t quite remember either the distance or duration. No problem. Just use the instant pace calculators in the Add Activity page. As you type the details into the duration or distance boxes, the pace for the run updates instantly on your right.

Here is the cool part. Any input box that has the new Adjustable Input icon in it can be ticked up or down by hitting the ↑ or ↓ keys. Check it out, just hold down an arrow key and watch the numbers fly like a slot machine until you land on the target pace.

But that’s not all! Did you hit ‘L’ when trying to enter ‘:’ in the duration box? Bam! It just fixed itself. Did you enter the duration in the distance field? Bam, instantly fixed again!

Look for more inputs on RP to feature the new Adjustable Input snaziness soon marked by the icon. Let us know if you can think of any other neat, time-saving features to make logging even more enjoyable.
